What did you want to be when you grew up?

Princess, Cowgirl, Mermaid, Cyndi Lauper… Yep I wanted to be all of those too. Teachers, Parents, Imaginary friends kept asking

“What do you want to be when you grow up Jess?”

What did you want to be when you grew up?

For me this question stuck with me ever since I could remember. Initially from a very young age I wanted to be a Vet. My love for animals has been my biggest personality trait, so I thought a Vet would fit the bill. However once I got into my teens I realised that just because I loved animals that would not mean I’d make a good Vet. I’m a total mess when animals die….so the last thing little Janey needs when her cat gets put down is the Vet having a full on emotional breakdown.

After that I had no clue what I wanted to be. I went through school, college and some of University not knowing what path I was actually on. My upbringing was very much – do well at school, find a job and stick with it. So that’s what I did.

Fast-forward 10 years and I was doing pretty well in the corporate world. In the realm of IT Project Management. SNOOZE!!! How did I end up here? This was never my plan. Being in Project Management meant I got made redundant… a lot; so it was on to the next role and the next. Throughout all my roles I performed very well, received good appraisals and promotions. I got the job done but I never had that spark. I always craved more and it took me a while to work out why I was so unhappy and unsatisfied.

I wanted to work for myself.

It was never something people/parents/teachers gave as an option. That needs to change. I’m passionate about helping kids become entrepreneurs as an option for their career plan, but that is a totally different topic and for another blog post.

Once I had the idea firmly in my head about wanting to work for myself I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. So first of all I ran a cake business (hey I wanted to run a biz and I liked cake)…. it did very well but it was not what I wanted to do long term. I then set up Pink Chilli which was a Virtual Assistant company I set up when I left the corporate world. It did really well but I was trading time for money and it wasn’t my passion. I then got round to Jess Green which originally was a Digital Marketing coaching business, however since having Guinevere my priorities have changed and I’m currently going through a rebrand and changing direction. So watch this space!

I’ve been on a massive journey with running my own businesses and made even more mistakes. One of the main things for me was the lack of community and support while I was on the journey. Yes I’ve got friends, but not many who run their own business and it’s impossible for them to totally understand. Then I met Janine through a group online course we both took. We totally clicked and after lots of wine drinking strategy sessions the Female Business Hub was born!

My main key value in life is Freedom- creating time freedom for me to actually enjoy life with the ones I love and financial freedom to not have to worry about the next time my washing machine breaks and having to get a new one. In January 2015 I had my gorgeous daughter Guinevere. My priorities changed and creating a lifestyle for myself and my family where I can afford both time and money to really enjoy life became even more important.

Freedom is my currency ~ Female Business Hub

In my past businesses I basically made myself an employee in my own business. I was working crazy hours, for not much money and I was fed up and stressed. I’m happy to say I’m almost out of that cycle and part of this new journey is because I want to help others like you do the same. To create a community of awesome women who can come along for the ride with me and Janine.

  1. Great story Jess, I love it! I too didn’t know what I wanted to do. Now, as a biz owner, I also feel really strongly that careers advice needs to be brought into the present century. Most people I’ve spoken to feel disappointed by the advice they were given. I think a good start would be to change the question from ‘what do you want to be’ to ‘what do you enjoy doing’. Looking forward to reading your thoughts on this in future blog posts xxx

Thanks Lou. One of my big passions is having entrepreneurial skills taught to children. I’ll definitely will be blogging about this in the future as it’s something I’m passionate about. I believe if I had this kind of support at school I would have had a much earlier path to working for myself. It’s why i felt lost for a long time. With my children I’ll make sure they know they don’t have to go and get a job. I want to raise entrepreneurial kids, even if they don’t go down that route those skills are invaluable. For now check out this video, it’s one of my faves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx3GuO41Jyg
