Entrepreneur Friday – Pamela Sommers
It’s Entrepreneur Friday, one of my favourite times. This week the lovely Pamela connected with us via Facebook. Pamela shares her journey and her fabulous business SommerSparkle. She had me at “sparkle” – sit back and enjoy.
Tell us a bit about your business
SommerSparkle is an e-boutique that provides a selection of beautiful jewellery & accessories for every special occasion including weddings, prom, first communion, christenings and more.
What inspired you to start it?
We believe everyone has a right to feel ‘special’ no matter what the occasion.
What is your career background?
My career started off in retail, which included mainly customer service. I then progressed to retail banking. After that I decided to work in a school, which I enjoyed until I had an accident, which led me to starting a business.
What is your vision for your business?
For customers to discover the SommerSparkle experience. We realise the importance of those special moments in life, where people come together to celebrate a life event. Life should be a celebration. We all deserve to feel special.
You’ve balanced being a successful business woman with raising a family. Any advice for other women?
I think balance is the key element. Accept you can’t do everything and start with one thing at a time. Having a plan helps, but be flexible enough so you are not hard on yourself if things don’t go according to plan. After all you are human.
How do you maintain a good work/life/family balance?
I think taking some time out for yourself helps. I love to exercise or dance to music, which is great for fitness and helps to relieve stress. It also puts me in a positive frame of mind so that I am able to maintain other areas of my life.
What was your light bulb moment? When did you realise you wanted to be an entrepreneur/business owner?
I had a gardening accident which led me to being unable to use my right hand. This was devastating as we all become used to doing everyday things with our hands. I also had to leave the job in the school, which was a shock to the system.
One evening I was admiring a bracelet I had bought and telling my son how good it made me feel, especially after receiving compliments about it. I also told him how much I loved the sparkle.
That was the moment I thought and said out loud… ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to make others feel just as special?’ So it all began with a bracelet… We then started thinking of names and Sparkle was said and then we decided on the Sommers after our name and so ‘SommerSparkle’ began…
What lessons have you learned along the way?
Perseverance in the face of adversity. Despite my wrist injury I still carried on even though it was very painful at times.
What has surprised you about owning your own business?
How personal development plays such a big part of being a business owner. Personal growth can be very empowering and encourages you to know yourself at a much deeper level.
Who and what inspires you?
Putting a smile on someone’s face is inspiration in itself.
Do you have a daily routine or rituals you do?
I pray and meditate daily, this helps to keep me focused. I also exercise frequently.
What obstacles have you had along the way?
My right wrist injury has caused me problems with using technology, as it can be very painful at times.
What is one thing you wish you’d known when you first started?
I wish I had acquired more technical knowledge beforehand, as this would have saved time.
Tell us your favourite tools that make your life easier (apps, websites, software etc)
I enjoy using Canva and Buffer is also a good time saving tool.
What is your favourite quote?
‘Everyone is a star and deserves a chance to shine’ Marilyn Monroe.
More about Pamela:
I have always been creative – I remember playing instruments as a child and I wrote my first song at the age of 8. In my early teens I continued my love of song writing and formed a school band. I was in bands until my mid-20’s.
After school I went into retail, mostly sustomer service which I enjoyed. Although, I was very determined and single-minded. I only wanted to be a famous singer. This all changed when I married and got back into retail and then on to retail banking. I was an Account Manager amongst other roles for a while. I then felt something inside saying I should be doing something different. I started working in a school, which I loved. Alas I had to leave due to a gardening accident which left me unable to use my right hand.
I was devastated, imagine taking that for granted; I mean we use our hands for everything. One day I bought a bracelet and it cheered me up. In the evening, whilst admiring the sparkle on it, I said to my son imagine if I could make others feel just as special.
So it all began with a bracelet… We then thought of names and thought of ‘Sparkle’ then to name it after us (Sommers) and so ‘SommerSparkle’ began…
I want to help people feel special and celebrate those special moments. That’s why we provide beautiful things for special occasions.
Thank you Pamela for sharing with us!
