Time for another Entrepreneur Friday!

Cendrine Marrouat is one of my favourite bloggers, content curators and biz owner.  We connected on social media over 2 years ago and I have followed her ever since!  She is also an author of “The Little Big eBook on Social Media Audiences: Build Yours, Keep It, and Win” which is a must read for any entrepreneurs and small business owners struggling with social media.  Over to Cendrine…

Tell us a bit about your business and you?

First of all, thank you for having me on the blog. I’m honoured!

I was born and raised in southern France, and moved to Canada in 2003. I started my career as a translator and French instructor to adults. I also released a few poetry books and wrote two plays before becoming an art reviewer and journalist.

I caught the social media bug more than five years ago. Now I’m a coach, blogger, curator and author, and one of Paper.li’s blog staff writers.

In my spare time, photography is my muse. It’s a very relaxing hobby!

What is Social Media Slant and what inspired you to start it?

Social Media Slant, my latest website, is all about social media tips, tools, news and stats. My goal was to create a digital spot where small business owners and solo-entrepreneurs alike could find answers to their questions.

What is your career background?

I am a former English major. I hold a bachelor’s degree in English-to-French Translation. As far as the rest is concerned, I am completely self-taught. I learnt by observation, trials and errors. It’s the best practice, in my opinion.

What is your vision for Social Media Slant?

I would like the site to become one of the top resources for social media marketing and branding around the web.

Just take a look around and you will find much more than a blog. There are several magazines featuring handpicked content in several categories: latest news and trends, videos and podcasts, WordPress resources, etc.

Once a month, I also host the #smslantchat Twitter chat. Participants discuss the challenges and opportunities of managing a brand on the social web. It’s a free-for-all.

How do you maintain a good work/life/family balance?

When your work is your passion, it’s usually hard to disconnect from it!

Let’s just say that I have gotten better at managing my time. Weekends are now dedicated to relaxation. And I tend to stay away from my smartphone as much as possible.

What was your light bulb moment? When did you realise you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I don’t recall any light bulb moment. Things happened naturally.

What lessons have you learned along the way?

Do you want the long or the short version? 😉

More seriously, here are two very important lessons that I learnt early in my career: 1) Let your actions speak louder than your words; and 2) Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Who and what inspires you?

Two things: life and the people who stick to their visions no matter what.

Do you have a daily routine or ritual you do?

I speak to myself a lot! It helps me express my ideas better.

That is actually how I learn to speak English…

What obstacles have you had along the way?

I could write a book on them. However, I don’t like to dwell on them. It’s much more fun to try and use them to my advantage. 

What is one thing you wish you’d known when you first started?

Nothing. I know it sounds surprising, but I am actually happy that I had to learn the hard way. It taught me to take nothing for granted.

Tell us your favourite tools that make your life easier (apps, websites, software etc)

I would be nothing without my Inbox, my Paper.li papers, and TweetDeck. And there is also Mention.net, which allows me to monitor conversations around the web from one convenient dashboard!

What is your favourite quote / daily mantra?

My favourite quote has to be one by Khalil Gibran: “And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.” The Prophet is the most beautiful book I have ever read!

Make sure you connect with Cendrine over on all her social media channels below and don’t forget her book!  Thank you Cendrine for your daily inspiration!
