When I decided to give up my job and go freelance full-time, I was expecting it to be hard. I was prepared for the usual, known pitfalls of being self-employed: uncertainty of income, being your own admin department, juggling clients. But over the last few months I’ve learnt some things that I haven’t expected, some trivial, some challenging and some just plain amusing.
Setting up in the US, new and seasoned entrepreneurs and micro business owners can find formalizing a business concept challenging. Legal issues can be expensive and determining what types of licenses, regulations and codes you are required to adhere to can be difficult. There are so many unknowns when you start a business: entity formation, employment laws, intellectual property, contracts, licenses, taxes… the list goes on and on. It can be daunting and discouraging.
